About Safer Internet Day

Since its launch in 2004 as part of the EU SafeBorders project, and with the Insafe network taking it up in 2005, Safer Internet Day has grown into a global event celebrated in around 170 countries. It has become a key date in the online safety calendar, encouraging safe, responsible, and positive use of digital technologies worldwide.

Safer Internet Day (SID) is an annual global event in early February, coordinated by the UK Safer Internet Centre (UKSIC) and Better Internet for Kids (BIK) networks, aiming to promote safer and more responsible digital technology use, especially for children and young people, by focusing on timely themes like AI, scams, or cyberbullying, with events, resources, and campaigns encouraging collaboration for a better online world.

With AI becoming ever more present online—from chatbots to voice assistants—this year’s campaign will explore how AI can be used positively while highlighting the ethical and practical considerations of responsible usage.

Educational resources for schools and youth groups

Free resources will support discussions with young people of all ages, covering topics such as:

  • Using AI safely in everyday digital tools;

  • Understanding chatbots and voice assistants; and

  • Ethical considerations and responsible digital behaviour.
